Yesterday I posted a preview image of the original Shenyang J-11 fighter project. From that same specification of the PLAAF that called for lightweight air superiority fighter to replace the J-6 and as well as the Q-5 in strike roles that resulted in Shenyang's first J-11 project, Nanchang also submitted this design:

Unlike the Shenyang J-11, the Nanchang J-12 design was actually built and flown in prototype form and made its maiden flight on 26 December 1970. The J-12 was extremely light with a gross weight just over 6000 lbs.
Possibly nine J-12s were built prior to the program cancellation in 1977 as it was shown that the Chengdu J-7, based on the MiG-21, was far superior. The J-12 itself was dogged by its lightweight, insufficient firepower, and low thrust engine.
Two J-12 have survived to this day and can be seen at the PLAAF's museum in Datangshan.
