Flieger Revue, May 2009: Chengdu J-10B

Posted 07-10-2009 at 08:59 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

There has been a very fascinating twist on the Chengdu J-10 development lately. For about the last three years there has been a lot of speculation about a planned upgraded version of the J-10. The baseline model that's now in service with the PLAAF is the J-10A with the two seater designated J-10AS (the "S" being a Chinese word for two seater, I think).

The upgraded version was the J-10B (though some Western publications call the J-10AS the J-10B) and there had been a lot...

The following sneak peek was published in an issue of the German aviation magazine Flieger Revue several months ago:

The article being previewed is a short update on the status of the newest attack helicopter in the world, WZ-10, a development of several Chinese aerospace companies including the Changhe Aircraft Industries Group (CAIG), the China Helicopter Research and Development Institute...

Drachenflügel/Part Two- Xian JH-7/Original PLAAF variant (Flieger Revue Extra)

Posted 11-19-2007 at 09:25 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

Last up the ongoing series of profile illustrations that I have posted previously that I did for Andreas Rupprecht's articles in Flieger Revue Extra, this is the Xian JH-7 as it was orignally intended for the PLAAF:

The original design for the Xian JH-7 has its roots in the same circumstances that led to the development of the Nanchang Q-6 that I had posted yesterday. In 1977 the Chinese

Drachenflügel/Part Two- Nanchang Q-6 (Flieger Revue Extra)

Posted 11-18-2007 at 11:46 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

Continuing the ongoing series of profile illustrations that I have posted previously that I did for Andreas Rupprecht's articles in Flieger Revue Extra, here is the next unbuilt design in the series, the Nanchang Q-6 swing-wing fighter-bomber:

The Nanchang Q-6 fighter-bomber had its genesis in the Battle of Hoang Sa which took place in January 1974 in the disputed Paracel Islands...

Drachenflügel/Part Two- Shenyang J-13 (Flieger Revue Extra)

Posted 11-03-2007 at 10:18 AM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

Continuing the ongoing series of profile illustrations I did for Andreas Rupprecht's articles in Flieger Revue Extra, here we have two variations of the same aircraft to meet an evolving threat:

This is the Shenyang J-13 from around the late-1970s or so timeframe. It was a further development of the failed J-11 project I posted previously- in switching from the Spey engine to an...

Drachenflügel/Part Two- Nanchang J-12 (Flieger Revue Extra)

Posted 10-28-2007 at 11:55 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

Yesterday I posted a preview image of the original Shenyang J-11 fighter project. From that same specification of the PLAAF that called for lightweight air superiority fighter to replace the J-6 and as well as the Q-5 in strike roles that resulted in Shenyang's first J-11 project, Nanchang also submitted this design:

Unlike the Shenyang J-11, the Nanchang J-12 design was actually built and

Drachenflügel/Part Two- Shenyang J-11 (Flieger Revue Extra)

Posted 10-27-2007 at 04:38 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

Continuing the series of profiles I created for Part Two of "Drachenflügel" in the German magazine Flieger Revue Extra (issue No. 18) is the second of the designs. The first design for Part Two, the Shenyang J-10, I posted last night here.

This is the Shenyang J-11- again, this is a reused designation as the J-11 designator is now used by the license-built Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker that,

This was posted over on the Secret Projects forum:

"For those of us in the US of A wanting copies, I just found out that Linden Hill Imports, www.lindenhillimports.com, carries FR & has these issues in stock. If you've never dealt with LHI, it's hard to find a better outfit to deal with. Really good folks."
If you're looking for a US source for Flieger Revue and Flieger Revue Extra, Linden Hill may be a good option. I've not used them myself, but if anyone does, I'd like

Drachenflügel/Part One- The Chengdu J-9 (Flieger Revue Extra)

Posted 10-10-2007 at 11:07 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

The last set of profile art (the previous installment on Xian's bombers is here) I did for Part One of Andreas Rupprecht's Flieger Revue Extra article on Chinese combat aircraft deals with this interesting canard delta design:

This is the Chengdu J-9 in all-white prototype colors. The J-9 was a canard delta wing fighter with a single engine. The design dates from the 1970s and had

Continuing on the series of illustrations I did for Flieger Revue on Andreas Rupprecht's series on Chinese combat aircaft (the previous installment, the Nanchang Q-5B, can be found here.), below are three developments of the Xian H-6 bomber, the Chinese version of the venerable Tupolev Tu-16 "Badger":

These three designs are from Xian and are all based on the
