DFW | January 2010 | Founders' Plaza | Storm Front

Posted 05-22-2010 at 10:44 AM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

This was back on 28 January. Bizzaro day that was pretty much the only spring-like day for most of the winter. There were some rain showers from earlier in the day but a squall line from a frontal boundary was fast approaching and I thought it'd make an ominous backdrop for a panoramic shot of the UPS ramp.

Believe it or not this was about 3pm in the afternoon when the UPS flights all...

DFW|11 February 2010|Founders' Plaza|What's all this damn white stuff??

Posted 02-11-2010 at 09:19 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

Spot in VFR? Check.
Spot in 110 degree temps and get sunburned? Check.
Spot in single digit windchills? Check.
Spot in IFR? Check.
Spot in a thunderstorm? Check.
Spot in a snowstorm? Dammit, did that today, too. 'Cause that's how I roll.

It started snowing at 0300 local time today (and as of 2100 local it's STILL snowing) and it wasn't too bad this morning as I took the kids to school. And of course, I was going to swing by Founders' Plaza at DFW...

PHOTOS: DFW Founders' Plaza + More bad weather = Challenging shooting

Posted 08-19-2009 at 09:03 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

Back in the middle of May there were some storm cells approaching from the north and well, I just can't pass up a chance to go spotting in severe weather because that's how I roll. I haven't posted any of these pics yet but since I really haven't done much spotting this summer,so I gotta go through my May shots to get my fix.

Now we're talking. That's what a I call an *ominous* sky. This...

DFW Founders' Plaza: The first week of May, getting to know Mutha-Nature.....

Posted 07-22-2009 at 11:20 AM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

It's been a busy summer lately and I haven't had the chance to go spotting as much as I can during the school year. I went for the first time out to Founders' Plaza since May just last week and was only out there for about an hour as it was just too frakkin' hot. But I do have some stuff from May I haven't posted yet and have been going through them.

The first week of May had some seriously lousy weather. Lots of thunderstorms and less than ideal photography conditions throughout the...

Caught in the Act!

Posted 07-11-2009 at 09:52 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

This was taken back in April by a fellow forum member from the Texas Photo Forum who I've gotten keyed in on Founders' Plaza (thanks Mark!). He stopped by on his lunch hour from work to check the place out for the first time and was suitably impressed with place.

In addition to my aviation art I also indulge in aviation photography. I haven't posted much recent stuff here on my blog since...

Saying good-bye to a grand old lady....

Posted 05-23-2009 at 10:48 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

Due to the ongoing economic situation, UPS recently retired its DC-8 fleet sooner than anticipated with the last UPS DC-8 flight taking place on May 12. I thought that April 16 was the last time I'd seen the UPS DC-8, but going through my photos tonight I've found a set of shots that would be the last time I'd be seeing UPS's venerable old DC-8s 'round these parts ever. These shots were taken on a gloomy afternoon on April 30 from Founders' Plaza:

PHOTOS: DFW Founders Plaza...and Mother Nature has it in for me again....

Posted 04-14-2009 at 09:52 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

It's official. Mother Nature hates my guts. The end of March wasn't been a good week for spotting as each time I have the free time, the weather has been atrocious...and of course that day they were doing inbound traffic on the 31s with a flow delay and I couldn't make it out to get some shots of a relatively unusual event at DFW......Grrrrrrrrr...oh well, try to make the best of it, I got to play with just about every darn aperture and shutter setting from here to BFE experimenting with how to...

PHOTOS: DFW Founders' Plaza...I'm going spotting, so the weather will probably suck...

Posted 04-13-2009 at 10:25 AM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

Lately Mother Nature has been trying very hard to irritate me. I have some time go spotting and the weather and ambient lighting conditions end up catapulting me into dimensions of suck I didn't realize existed. Such was the case the last week of March when I wanted to try and catch the Lufthansa Cargo MD-11F departure........

^Of some thirty shots, this was pretty much the only one worth posting...but

PHOTOS: DFW Founders' Plaza...the point and shoot's last hurrah....

Posted 04-13-2009 at 12:16 AM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

These are the last pics I took with my older point and shoot before switching over to a Nikon DSLR.

I've been trying to catch the departure of UPS's new 747-400Fs now that they've retired their 747-200Fs earlier this year. The day prior the wife tipped me off that if I could get to Founders' Plaza no later than 815am I might be able to catch the UPS 747 (yep, the wife. She doesn't shoot pics, but she'll go out there to relax between dropping two of the kids at their school and our

PHOTOS: DFW Founders' Plaza...is it supposed to be this cold in March?

Posted 04-12-2009 at 11:31 PM by Sentinel Chicken (The Chicken Works: The Aviation Art of JP Santiago)

Temps were only in the upper 30s with wind chills down in the low 30s. Supposedly some light snow fell out by Fort Worth Meacham Airport earlier that day, but nothing significant.

Of course all the transplants in the area from up north were out and about walking around in shorts. Freaks.

Took the plunge and upgraded to a Nikon DSLR (got a deal I couldn't pass up) and took it to Founders' Plaza this particular day to break it in. I had to experiment with the settings,
